The Hewlett Home (Architects : MPR Style Group) boldly sits as a modern day insertion into the typically poor creating stock of its surrounding atmosphere. The context is of varying building designs, scales and supplies so the residence creates a deliberate contrast in form and color. The homogeneous appearance of the residence permits the forms to be emphasized by sun and shadow with the play of light continually shifting and moving with the path of the sun.

Description from MPR
“Our design and style response was to place the living spaces on the upper floor as much better views and much more light were accessible. The bedrooms have been situated on the middle floor as this was a lot more private and enclosed. The lowest floor has a rumpus location linking the garden and swimming pool to the residence. The underlying design intent was to discover the notion of “prospect and refuge” inside a modern family members residence. The “prospect” was the beach and coast views to the south of the website which change continuously based on the season, climate and time of day. The “refuge” was the other desirable character where we produced a quality of space that offers a sense of sanctuary, enclosure and comfort.

These two driving desires for the property had been explored and accommodated through devising two sculpted concrete types responding to their distinct use. The types are rounded at the edges related to tubes which are independent of every single other enabling the upper tube to twist towards the view. The upper tube is open-ended which allows the northern winter sun to penetrate deeply into the living spaces although permitting an unimpeded outlook to the southern view. The type also supplies efficient passive ventilation drawing the prevailing north-east breeze by way of the home.

On the two decrease levels the character of the spaces modifications to areas of privacy and refuge. The middle tube houses the bedrooms, every with a diverse aspect and outlook. The reduced level has a cave like atmosphere with the area formed by a reduce bedrock wall and a dark stone floor connecting the internal and external spaces. The pool gives a water element spanning in between the rock wall and the garden.”
