I was surprised at how sad I felt when I learned of Steve Jobs’ death earlier this week. Needless to say, I didn’t know him personally and I don’t even own an Apple product (though my kids do). Was it because he was only a few years older than me? Similar to the passing of any iconic, innovative, creative individual? The end of a man who was a pioneer and visionary in creating and improving technology– personal computers, digital music and cell phones? The knowledge that ultimately – no matter how wealthy or smart or business savvy you are – death will find you?
All of the above?
Death makes me think about what’s important and what’s not so important. How I want to live my life. How grateful I am for today – this moment. How relationships should trump “things” and how we’re all connected – through our humanity – to each other and thus have a responsibility to one another.
That’s a big reason why I work where I do – because I value relationships and desire to help others in my small way.
Many of you have been on the receiving end of my “how shopping at Jubilee Furniture is impacting those most in need in DuPage County through the programs and services offered through Outreach Community Ministries” spiel. But no matter how many times I say it – it shouldn’t diminish the fact that it’s true. I would never want anyone to buy something at the store just to support Outreach – but when you find something you love and can use in your home – PLUS – you’re helping area kids and families – well that’s the icing on the cake!

In a commencement speech given in 2005 at Stanford University, Steve Jobs told the graduates:
“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
And that’s my prayer for you, dear reader – the ability to listen well to your heart and intuition and then the courage to act on what you hear.
